Studying painting and sculpture, Alvear often used nail polish in his projects, leading his friends to ask him to paint their own nails. Sculptural nail artist Juan Alvear dipped his toes into the nail art world as a byproduct of his studies at New York’s Cooper Union. I mean, one celebrity–albeit one with a skincare empire and a powerful hand in the business of aesthetics–has the ability to sway the trajectory of nail salons everywhere? And while there’s no guaranteeing that minimalist nails will give way to bright colors and vibrant designs, it’s impossible to deny the effect that celebrity nail art tendencies have on the beauty community. Those that swear by the Rhode founder’s aesthetic promptly declared death to the glazed look, sharing that it was now the summer of funky nail art. However this summer, Bieber appears to have switched out her subdued, “clean girl” manicure for a perfectly mismatched set of maximalist nails. The elevated take on a minimalist mani had its standalone beauty moment as the hashtag #haileybiebernails gained nearly 552M TikTok views over the last year. Nails have metamorphosed out of an afterthought, a mere aesthetic component, and are taking up their own space in contemporary beauty culture. Since the mani’s debut over 40 years ago, the world of nail art has undergone a polish reinvention, a Renaissance of sorts.įrom carefully bejeweled to pearl adorned to colorfully airbrushed, the design possibilities are endless, and have become as essential to any look as a stylish bag or necklace. By 1975, nail art had transitioned into an era of experimentation, leading American makeup artist Jeff Pink to create the ever-loved nail look-the French manicure. By the 1930s, French makeup artist Michelle Menard launched the Revlon cosmetics house, and soon, nail enamel in a variety of colors was being sold in drugstores across America. market until the late 19th century when the first-ever nail salon opened in New York. While ancient women were clearly committed to their own cuticle culture, nail art didn’t reach the U.S. In Ancient China, which has been credited as the birthplace of the first “nail polish,” women soaked their nails in a curious blend of egg whites, gelatine, beeswax and dye from flowers, resulting in a reddish tone. Even Egyptian Queen Cleopatra–known for her love of beauty–would wear blood red nails to demonstrate her royal status and general cutthroat vibe. The historical beginnings of the OG manicure are impossible to pin down to one culture, but evidence of early nail care dates back to 5000 BC, when Indian women used henna to stain their nails and upper class Ancient Egyptians sported gilded fingertips. That being said, nail art has been around for much, much longer. ![]() Be it by virtue of TikTok and its wildfire-esque virality or a post-pandemic need for self-expression, nail art’s role at the forefront of contemporary beauty is undeniable. Nail art–from the most basic of French tips to designs that take upwards of three hours–can reflect one’s personal style, the aesthetic they portray or what they hope the world to see. And yet, even with such a small canvas, the designs one chooses for their nails speaks volumes. The average woman has a nail length of only 12.2mm. ![]()
