Things may be slowing moving in the right direction, but for now, the onus is still on the consumer to find sunscreen that’s safer and actually works. Some public safety experts say this is just one example of the backward nature of product regulation in the U.S.īeyond safety issues is another question: Does sunscreen even work? EWG found that nearly 75 percent of sunscreens don’t work and/or contain concerning ingredients that are readily absorbed by the body. This builds on previous research showing that sunscreen chemicals hit the bloodstream within a day of using them - and at levels high enough to prompt a government investigation on safety. The sunscreen chemicals tested in this FDA study included avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate and octinoxate, and all six active ingredients tested readily absorbed into the bloodstream of humans involved the study - and at concentrations that surpass an important FDA safety threshold. Food and Drug Administration-led 2020 study found that “chemical sunscreen ingredients are systemically absorbed after one application, and some ingredients can stay in the blood for at least three weeks.” The effects of sunscreen may linger longer than expected, too. Sunscreen Chemicals Build Up in Your Blood EWG VERIFIED frees consumers from the same limited sunscreen options every year. Sunscreens must also meet performance criteria to ensure strong UVA protection. To get approved for the EWG VERIFIED mark, products must first be formulated to achieve our criteria for ingredient safety, the same requirement that thousands of EWG VERIFIED cosmetics have to meet. Looking for this mark is a quick and easy way to identify the most protective products from the hundreds that are featured in our Guide to Sunscreens. In this 17th annual guide, the group found that only one in four of the more than 1,700 sunscreens reviewed met those standards.ĮWG VERIFIED sunscreens meet our exacting standards for ingredient safety, transparency and efficacy. To help navigate the sunscreen landscape, the group introduced the EWG VERIFIED® Sunscreen, suncreens that both meet EWG’s strict standards for sun protection and avoid harmful ingredients. The long-term use of these chemicals, and especially chemicals not adequately tested for safety, could be problematic.” “Despite the known toxicity concerns, oxybenzone is still widely used as a non-mineral active ingredient in sunscreens. “We slather these ingredients on our skin, but many of these chemicals haven’t been adequately tested,” said Carla Burns, EWG senior director for cosmetic science. Even the European Commission, which reviews ingredient safety in Europe, published a final opinion finding oxybenzone unsafe for use at current levels. The National Toxicology Program released findings linking oxybenzone exposure to a higher risk of thyroid tumors in female rats. For instance, oxybenzone - a suspected hormone-disrupting chemical that is readily absorbed into the body - is used much less in the more than 1,700 products EWG examined, but it was still found, as were other troubling ingredients. With warmer weather right around the corner, though, many people are looking for the best sunscreens to cut their risk of sun overexposure, sunburns and possibly skin cancer.Įnvironmental Working Group’s 17th annual Guide to Sunscreens is a mix of good and bad news when it comes to the state of sunscreens sold in American and beyond. The withdrawal of Spain and Poland from the joint military exercise has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the participating countries. The president warned that Turkey's actions were aimed at purportedly enhancing the status of the Pseudo-state, a matter of concern that must not be overlooked. He urged them to thoroughly investigate in advance which other participants will be involved. Highlighting the recurring nature of such incidents, President Christodoulides emphasized the importance of caution for states invited to Turkey's exercises, including those organized within NATO. According to the initial information received, Turkey had organized the exercise and extended an invitation to the Pseudo-state. When questioned about the joint exercise, he revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had initiated inquiries into the situation. President Christodoulides also addressed the matter during the 55th Pancyprian Congress of ETYK. As a result, both Spain and Poland swiftly communicated their decision to withdraw from the exercise to the relevant authorities. Through these efforts, it was discovered that the participating states, Spain and Poland, were not aware in advance of the inclusion of the illegal secessionist entity. I think even if we said, this is now past beta, the paradigm for online stuff just doesn't work that way now. You're getting in there at a much cheaper rate than when it's finished and you can maybe help us define how we operate. It's like saying 'hey, we're going to have this really fancy hotel, but if you want to stay in this wing which is finished but maybe all the bits aren't quite working - there's no hot water yet - you can'. There's a game experience there - it's not got nearly as much as we'll have in the final game but you can go and see how ships feel, find out what you think, and get your voice heard in our community as we make it better. The way I look at it is, if you've supported Star Citizen you can download and play 2.63 which is a mini, early-stage version of this universe and play around. Even with those games now, they get patched, they add things, make things better over time. There was an obsession with 'when will it get released'. We'd talk about a game for years, we'd show it, but no one would have their hands on it 'til it was out. Where do you draw a line in the sand between alpha, beta, Early Access? Are they just labels?Ĭhris Roberts: I feel like they're just labels - people still think of the old way, like my past games. And then from there we'll add more features for specific activities - mining, repair, building out more of the infrastructure for a dynamic universe. There's a basic buying and selling mechanic, hauling cargo, the ability to earn and spend money on clothes, weapons, ship items or ship weapons. We have procedural missions so there's a lot of 'go deliver something to this place', 'go identify a dead body on a spaceship', 'go after this particular pirate'. Now it's a scalable, modular mission system which designers can build from different blocks. the previous 2.63 update was done the old scripted way. The AI is still fairly basic - there's a lot more coming, but the AI. When you log off and your ship is damaged, when you come back it'll still be damaged. It's the first one which has proper persistence for your character, ship and items in terms of what their state is, their location is. The price will probably go up a little bit and it will have much more of the features and content going on.ģ.0 is the first time you'll have some of the basic game loops and mechanics. It'll build and grow from there, and then you could say 'well, it's not really Early Access anymore'. Are you in a state now that you'd term beta? What's next?Ĭhris Roberts: The term beta in terms of Star Citizen - with 3.0 the game is moving into a phase akin to Early Access. Five years after its announcement, where is the future of Star Citizen headed? Will it ever be finished? Here's Chris Roberts with his take.Īt Gamescom we're getting a good look at Star Citizen version 3.0. So here we are, with fans again wondering when the next update will arrive. The latest best guesstimate for launch now seems to be early October. But again, Star Citizen's development is taking longer than expected. My original plan for this interview was to run it alongside the launch of 3.0, which was expected by many fans to launch last week. Those who were there - or who watched remotely - got to see more details of Star Citizen's hotly-anticipated update 3.0, plus future enhancements such as the game's fancy new face over IP technology. Gamescom saw a huge press conference for the game. Unsurprisingly, he falls in to the first school of thought - and was keen to explain why. I met up with the Star Citizen figurehead, Chris Roberts, at Gamescom last month for a frank chat on how things were going. Here is a crowdfunded game - or the foundations of one, at least - which is way behind schedule, which often fails to hit deadlines, and which never seems to quite live up to its promise. It's a game in which people have already invested significant amounts of money.īut it's that same money that, for others, is a problem. For fans, it is an in-development wonder, a work-in-progress promise of a bright, stellar future. There are two schools of thought on the long, long-in-development Star Citizen. We offer a range of grille layouts to choose from, and we’ll help you decide if they are a practical addition to your new hardware. While not really a problem unless the windows were damaged or are near the end of their operating life span, fallen grilles and muntins require you to replace the entire unit.Īt Renewal by Andersen® of Montana, we offer a range of standard and custom windows that are manufactured to fit your home’s measurements. This also occurs when the frames shrink, with the muntins often popping out of the frame. The grilles can also fall from their place as the window settles, shifts or gets older. You can counteract this though by using Low-E glass for the window. They can also slightly affect the energy efficiency of the window itself as the muntins allow for less gas fill in the sealed unit. Because they take up space inside the glass, they can reduce the amount of sun and exterior views entering your home. While the prospect of enhancing your windows’ looks is tempting, there are times when the grilles aren’t practical. Some of the more ornamental grilles are better suited for traditional homes, while others are designed to add some detail to more modern homes. When choosing a grille layout for your windows, it’s important that you consider the architectural style of your home. Notable grille layouts that boast this added functionality include the aforementioned colonial which makes entering through the window impossible. These range from Colonial Grilles, which often fill in the entire glass, to the more subtle prairie and ladder type grilles.Īpart from enhancing the appeal of your windows, grilles are a good safety feature as well since they restrict entry in the event the glass is broken. It’s not uncommon for windows with very large glass areas, such as picture, double-hung and casement windows to have some sort of muntin or window strips. Window grilles are usually installed when you want to add some architectural detail to the windows to enhance their aesthetics. In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Montana discusses when you should or shouldn’t add grilles or muntins to your new windows. This is a great way to keep up with the latest developments in the field.

Adding acrylic into the plaster also reduces absorbency, thereby reducing the number of sealing coats required prior to painting. However, acrylic additions will also slow the curing time down, which can be an issue for some applications. Hydrostone is a stronger and more durable plaster to begin with, so this increase is noteworthy. At a 10% level, our limited testing revealed that the Acrylic Modifier for Plaster increases the amount of force required to break ordinary Plaster of Paris by 50% and increases the amount of force required to break USG’s Hydrostone by 25%. The liquid additive is mixed with water prior to adding the powdered plaster, usually between 3-10% of the weight of plaster used. GOLDEN Custom Product “Acrylic Modifier for Plaster” was developed around 1990 to improve the overall strength and chip-resistance of cast objects by integrating a matrix of acrylic polymers within the cast object. The concept of adding acrylic to strengthen plaster is not a new idea. Adding acrylic paints or medium may also improve the overall plaster strength because they form a network within the plaster. This is a useful coloring method because, unlike surface painted plaster, chipped areas will not be as noticeable. GOLDEN Heavy Body Acrylics can be used on a properly sealed surface, but they will retain more brush and tool marks.Īcrylic paint may also be added into the plaster slurry to tint the cast object. These paints are thin enough to not cover up casting details. High Flow Acrylics were compared to Fluid Acrylics on bare plaster and both absorbed readily with excellent adhesion. Certainly other products may be used (GAC 800 is an excellent coating for chalky surfaces), provided they are sufficiently thin enough to readily absorb into the plaster. Two or more coats create a less absorbent and more uniform paint layer. This thin acrylic medium is applied directly to the plaster surface. A ready to use, suitable conditioner for plaster is GOLDEN Airbrush Transparent Extender. Woodworkers remedy this with a pre-stain conditioner. A Brookfield CP3 Texture Analyzer is preparing to test the durability of a plaster disc tinted with Fluid Indian Yellow Hue. The negative side effect is akin to staining raw wood the color tends to be somewhat blotchy and uneven. These paints readily absorb into the plaster. GOLDEN High Flow Acrylics may be applied directly to unsealed plaster. Once the surface is sealed, thicker products such as Fluid Acrylics or Heavy Body Acrylics can be used. As each coat continues sealing the surface, the plaster remains a bit darker. An indicator of this is the plaster darkens while wet, and then lightens as it dries. Allow time for each layer to sufficiently dry. This is the key to painting with acrylics onto plaster. Uncoated plaster is extremely absorbent and allows thin products to penetrate deeply and seal the surface, thus paving the way for the next layer. Therefore, thin products are better suited as the initial coats. However, the surface of cast plaster is usually smooth and thicker paints often cannot penetrate deep enough to create a strong bond. Drying rooms or low temperature ovens expedite the drying rate for objects.Īcrylics are alkaline in the wet state and adhere well to plaster. Ultimately, the plaster needs to be very dry in order for the initial priming layers to properly bond to the plaster surface. This process may take up to a month, so follow the plaster manufacturer’s recommendations on curing time. The darker area has three thin layers applied.īefore painting plaster, it is important to allow the material to become fully dry. Airbrush Transparent Extender is used to seal the surface of the cast plaster. Traditionally shellac is used as a plaster sealer, but this article focuses on using waterborne acrylics for both sealing and painting. Of course other sources are now known, but this specific vein of gypsum was proven to be an extremely important component for mold-making and casting and the name is now synonymous with plaster. The term “Plaster of Paris” originates from 15 th century Montmartre, France – the source for its prized hemihydrated calcium sulfate. The duel use of form and function is evidenced by their opulent palaces and tombs, including the pyramids of Giza. Ancient Egyptian builders employed calcined (heated) gypsum into their plaster, which improved the functional use. The rather simple mixture of lime powder, crushed limestone and water was used to achieve smooth walls for interior wall decoration. Plaster has been decorated with paint since its earliest known usage back in 7500 B.C. On the right is the same object painted initially with High Flow Acrylics, then Fluid Iridescent Bright Gold (Fine).
